Walk in the Woods

Nice Day

Dear Diary,

March 28, 2015,

Today went really well!! It was sunny and warm, so Sierra and I decided to go for a bike ride. We went to the store, than biked all the way to Hochzoll to the big river that runs through there. It was really cool! There were a lot of different coloured and shaped rocks along the shore. There were also  a lot of ducks! lol On the way back we stopped at a little chapel and I lit a candle. It is too bad we have to leave for Italy on a Sunday, because I have to miss church. At least I got to go to the chapel today!

I am SO excited about Italy! I can't believe I'm going!

Back home things are going crazy! My parents just bought the house in Killaloe and are moving into it on Easter. I am very happy I am not there amongst the chaos.

Oh, and Peeper's eggs are fertile! She's going to be a mama! I am so happy! Hopefully, there will be little Peppers when I get back!

Hurt

Dear Diary,

March 27, 2015,

Today, I don't know why! But I kept getting hurt! I got my fingers bashed twice, slipped and cut my hand, and pulled a muscle in my back. I did well in the round pen though! I hope we can go riding this afternoon.

Sierra the Whip Breaker!

Dear Diary,

March, 26, 2015,

I had an equine body language lesson today. I learned a lot, but did not do well. I guess I am not very bossy around horses. I find it hard to get big or scary. I'm a much better rider than a trainer! Sierra did well though! No surprise; Although, she did break the whip! She didn't even hit the pony. She just swished it at him to get him going and it snapped! lol. I felt bad for her, but they let her off easy, so can freely laugh about it! She has a new name now....

Sierra the Whip Breaker!

(has a nice ring to it)

Later:

I had such a frustrating day! I feel handicapped. I have no idea on how to use my body with the horses! All I know is love and kisses. When it comes to shovelling shit, I always end up day dreaming!

I am so slow......

Why is that? Do I not feel the need to rush? I feel like I am putting everyone down by my clumsiness. I am really lacking confidence right now.

15 Days In!

Dear Diary,

March 25, 2015,

I've been in Germany for 15 days! I already feel pretty jacked after all this mucking stalls, biking, running, and walking! My German is a little better, but not by much. It is a hard language to learn.

I have learned a lot of other things though! How to do a special gait on an Icelandic pony called a Tolt. I am also a pro at tacking up a horse now, washing a horse, raking a riding ring, working a horse in a round pen, and mucking stalls quickly! lol!

I've been to a few place as well.

  • The Frieberg Castle
  • A famous Church in Augsburg
  • The dome in Augsburg
  • The Augsburg zoo
The zoo was really cool! It was a scary bike ride there, because we had to bike through the city of Hochzoll. (I've never biked in a city) Then we had to take a bunch of back roads to get to the zoo. I thought we were lost, but we made it!

I love zoos! I should work at one someday. We saw many cool creatures such as leopards, lions, tigers, wild horses, rhinos, LOTS of ducks, and reptiles. Sierra quickly fell in love with this big, black bird who had red eyes, and ate baby chicks. She said he suited her personality. I kind of had to agree! I met a little monkey who was very friendly. He grabbed my finger through the fence, and kept trying to drag me in! It was hilarious!

I also got to touch a lemur. It ran past me while I was in the pen, and I reached out and touched it's tail. It was so soft!

Speaking of animals, the lady who is looking after Peeper for me got her a mate! Now they are Peeper and Cheeper! They might have babies by the time I get back!

Anyhow, I'm leaving for Italy Saturday! Blair and her family are going there for Easter holidays, and  asked if we would like to come. Of course I said yes! I'm so Excited!!!

More Work

Dear Diary,

March 17, 2016,

Wow! Today was hard! My arms got so sore from mucking. I'll admit it, I'm not nearly as strong as Sierra.

They got us to prun a whole field by hand today. That was exuasting! The sun was blazing, my hands were getting scratched and sore - progress was slow. We were up on that hill for two hours. I must be very weak! It was so horrid I tried to imagine I was somewhere else. That didn't help, so I tried to pretend I was acting in a movie where I  was in boot camp or was a medivial slave. Nothing helped. I dread this job tomorrow!

But we did get to ride today! That was fun! We went on a trial ride and even got to trot. That was a much more enjoyable experiance.

Work

March 17, 2015,

Dear Diary,

Today we worked hard! Mucked stalls, dug, raked, swept, cleaned all the riding tack, and then finally had a break! After that, we got to help out with the kids lessons, which I really enjoy doing! I don't know why, but I really love working with children! I learned a lot from their lessons too! For example, how to saddle, put on a bridal, and clean horses hoofs. I have to learn quick, since I have to start helping the children do it.

Days of the week

March 16, 2015,

Dear Diary,

Sierra and I forgot to tell the people we are working for that we are taking the weekends off! Opps!! Now I've been told I have to learn the days of the week in German!

Monday-montag
Tuesday-dienstag
Wensday-mittwoch
Thursday-donerstag
Friday-frietag
Saturday-samstag
Sunday-sonntag

Random Thought: I don't know about you, but donerstag seems like the name you would give a day that everyone becomes a blood donor.

First Days

March 15 2015,

Dear Diary,

Es ist ein gut tag! I went to town, went for a walk, went for a run, had a chat with Blair, and phoned my Mom!! It was a good day!

This experience has been good so far. The days are cold, but bearable. The cold here is very different then the cold back home. It is a damp cold. In my opinion, it is worse than the dry cold back home. It chills me to the bone. To make it worse, its cold all day!

The language has been very difficult to learn. Everyone tries to speak to me in German, and I'm not understanding much of it. The language barrier is very frustrating!

Thankfully Blair's family is amazing! They are SO nice, and can all speak English. Blair is a very interesting person. She likes to write, cook, and has an underlying spirituality. I had a very interesting conversation with her today. We chatted about writing and the importance of stories. She has this really cool quote at the front of the house that says,

"Unlike the popular belief, the world is not made up of atoms or molecules, but rather of stories."
             - unknown

This is so true! Not in a scientific sense, but in a more personal sense. For example, cultures are built off of stories, Jesus taught using stories, a culture is influenced by stories, our lives are stories! If bad things didn't happen nothing would move the plot, and no character would be developed. We would technically be zombies, roaming around with nothing to do.

First Day on the Farm

March 12 2015,

Dear Diary,

Today was my first day working on the farm. Islandpferde Liechleit. It is a beautiful Icelandic pony farm. All we really did today was muck stalls, and feed horses, but I learned so much and met so many people! I also learned more German! Dad had told me that many people speak English in Germany. Well...they do, but not all of them can speak it fluently! I guess I will learn to speak German more quickly now, because of that.

More work tomorrow!!!

Germany

March 10, 2015,

Dear Diary,

I am in GERMANY!!!

Wow!! I am still having a hard time believing it. I am literally on the other side of the ocean! This is what happened on the way here.

This was my first time on an air plane and the flight from Ottawa to Toronto was awesome! The best part was going through the clouds and breaking into the sunlight. I wish I could of captured it on film! After that, we landed in Toronto. It took us about half an hour to find our next flight, but we found it! Thankfully Sierra and I had a seat next to each other (I had the window!). There were T.V's by our seats which was really cool. There was so many movies to choose from! On the way there I watched "The Great Escape." I had seen it before, but I really liked it, so I saw it again. Then at around midnight, I fell asleep.

The view from the window was really cool when I woke up. I could see the ocean under me, but I was also feeling horribly sick! I had a terrible case of motion sickness. I tried to hold back from puking for about an hour, but after that it just flew! I had originally thrown up in a plastic bag I had found, but that didn't hold my puck, and it broke all over me. After that Sierra showed me where the puke bags were, and the last pukes made it safety in them. That was not fun! I was so happy when we landed! I wasn't even nervous about the fact we were in a different country.

Anyhow, we met the lady who is housing us at the airport. Her name is Blair and she is really nice! She has very cute children, and very nice room mates! Sierra and I can see the horse farm outside our window which is super cool! Hopefully today we will be able to go down there and say hi!

So Germany! Compared to Canada its geography is pretty different. The land is very flat, and there is a lot of farmland where we are. I haven't seen much forest or water. From the air Germany looks like a well made quilt! All the houses look the same which is crazy! They are all white with orange roofs. The towns look really cool from above! I saw two types of animals I had never seen before. I saw storks, and this weird breed of duck. The weather here is also incredible! No snow, green grass. It is warm enough to wear a sweater! Man, it will probably be colder than this when I get back home!

Any ways, I best be going now! It is nine twenty in the morning: four in the morning back home. I'm also super hungry! I'll keep you posted on my adventure!

Auf Weirdescehn!!

Dear Diary,

I leave for Germany March 9th. Next Monday! Man, this is so exciting! Mien Deutch ist schliect (my German is bad!) Oh well, I'll learn.

Our flight is eight hours. It is going to take forever! I'm sure there will be things to do though. Sierra sounds slightly nervous. I hope she relaxes.
